San Lorenzo Canyon Recreation Area

The San Lorenzo Canyon Loop offers a rugged and visually stunning hike through a landscape dominated by dramatic sandstone cliffs, natural arches, and unique hoodoos. This difficult 2.2-mile (3.6 km) route, with 201 feet (61 metres) of elevation gain, takes about 1 hour and 2 minutes to complete, winding through sandy paths, dry creek beds, and rocky sections that often require scrambling. You will find yourself immersed in a remote, peaceful desert environment, with expansive views and geological wonders at every turn.

Planning your visit to San Lorenzo Canyon requires a bit of foresight, as high-clearance or 4-wheel drive vehicles are recommended for trailhead access. While you can hike here year-round, be aware that wet conditions can make roads slick and increase the risk of flash flooding in the canyon. Good shoes with grip and hiking poles are highly recommended for the uneven, rocky, and silty ground, and navigation tools are advisable due to potentially hard-to-follow routes.
