Germans have played a significant role in the history of Stockholm. In the old town of Gamla Stan, the names of streets and buildings bear witness to the fact that half the population here was once German. Here is also the German church, "Tyska kyrkan". The church dates from around 1640. The interior style is German late Renaissance and Baroque.

Tyska Kyrkan is also called St. Gertrude's Church.
In the Hanseatic period this was a guild hall for German merchants, but in the 16th century it was converted into a church in neo-Gothic style.
The inside is baroque with gold-colored elements, such as the king's box, designed by Nicodemus Tessin (the elder).
The wine cellar from the guild era is still there.
