It was August 19, 1960, when a long relay of 46 torchbearers carried the Olympic torch from Giardini Naxos to Messina for the Games of the XVII Olympiad held that year in Rome, passing through the municipalities of Taormina, Letojanni, Forza d'Agrò, Sant'Alessio Siculo, Santa Teresa di Riva, Furci Siculo, Roccalumera, Nizza di Sicilia, Alì Terme, Itala, and Scaletta Zanclea.
