The Schilfbruch nature reserve near Hänigsen is home to predominantly black alder trees (Alnus glutinosa). This tree species is typical for moist to wet locations such as swamp forests, moors, and riparian areas. There, it forms so-called alder swamp forests, characterized by their high water levels and exceptional biodiversity.
The black alder is a medium-sized deciduous tree with a preference for soils permeated with groundwater. It plays an important ecological role by fixing nitrogen in the soil, thus improving soil fertility. It also provides a habitat for numerous animal and plant species.
