Tannenberg Castle ruins tower above Seeheim-Jugenheim on a wooded ridge of the Odenwald forest and are among the most impressive viewpoints in the region. The once mighty hilltop castle was built in the early 13th century and served to secure the important trade route along the Bergstraße. After its destruction in 1399, parts of the ring wall, foundations, cellar structures, and the keep were preserved. Today, the ruins reward hikers with a fascinating glimpse into medieval history and a magnificent panoramic view over the Bergstraße, the Rhine plain, and, in clear weather, as far as Frankfurt.
