A field chapel, also referred to as a roadside chapel, chapel or holy house, is a building intended to serve as protection for a statue representing a saint, as a small chapel or other sanctuary in a (formerly) rural environment. The aim is to offer passers-by the opportunity for a short moment of prayer or attention. Although a field chapel sometimes has the shape of a church, it is not a full-fledged church building where religious services are held. A somewhat larger (field) chapel, which does offer space to celebrate a mass or service, is sometimes called an oratorio.
