    Hiking

One of the most important historical sites in all of Hawaii, this is where King Kamehameha I lived. It is also the place where the first missionaries to reach Hawaii landed in 1820. Here they received permission from the king to stay on the islands.

The Huliheʻe Palace – Mokuaikaua Church loop from St. Michael the Archangel Parish offers a unique blend of coastal beauty and historical immersion in Kailua-Kona. This moderate 11.7-mile (18.8 km) hiking route, with a gentle 439 feet (134 metres) of elevation gain, guides you along Kailua Bay, past vibrant Hawaiian flora and charming shops. You'll experience a mix of paved paths and designated walking routes, making it an accessible and scenic journey.

Expect to spend around 4 hours and 54 minutes exploring this route, which is suitable for all fitness levels and makes for a great family friendly walk. Parking is available in the Kailua Village area, but it's wise to arrive early to secure a spot, especially if you're planning a full day of sightseeing. Don't forget water and sun protection, as much of the Ali'i Drive walking loop Kona is exposed.

What truly sets this trail apart is its direct connection to significant Hawaiian history, allowing you to step back in time. You'll pass the Huliheʻe Palace, once a summer retreat for Hawaiian royalty, and the Mokuaikaua Church, Hawaii's oldest Christian church, established by missionaries in 1820. This route offers a tangible link to the island's past, making it more than just a walk, but a cultural experience.
