Cycling

Formerly used as a military training area for the Bundeswehr, the Herzogsberge have long been open to the public again. Today, as a nature reserve, various still waters, forest areas with natural and structurally rich mixed oak and beech forests, as well as meager lowland mowing meadows and pipe grass meadows are characteristic of the area of the Ducal Mountains.

Gravel riding

The Herzogsberge nature reserve is a fascinating example of how a former military site can become a valuable refuge for nature. It is located southeast of Braunschweig in the Wolfenbüttel district (between Cremlingen and Sickte). Between 1934 and 2003, the area was used as a military training ground. Precisely because it was closed to the public during this time and not intensively used for agriculture, rare species were able to survive.
