    Hiking

The bridges in the Rezzo Valley are commonly called "Napoleonic" because local tradition and some historical sources link their construction or reconstruction to the period of Napoleon's occupation of Liguria and the opening of important new communication routes under French rule between 1805 and 1814. Not, therefore, because, as many say, they were used by Napoleon...

Embark on a moderate hike along the Medieval Stone Bridges Trail from Rezzo, a route that takes you deep into the Ligurian mountains. This 8.0-mile (13.0 km) journey, with an elevation gain of 1375 feet (419 metres), typically takes around 3 hours and 56 minutes to complete. As you follow the path, you will wind through thick beech forests before descending to the clear, green pools of the Giara stream. The trail offers a unique blend of forest paths and rocky stream beds, where limestone formations and the gentle flow of water create small canyons and waterfalls. You will encounter several historic stone arches, including the notable Napoleon Bridge, which add a timeless feel to your adventure.

To begin your hike, head to Rezzo's town center. You can find convenient parking near the municipal building, which also serves as the park headquarters. This central starting point makes it easy to access the trail and prepare for your journey. Consider starting your hike earlier in the day to fully enjoy the tranquility of the forest and stream. Always check local conditions before you go, especially during periods of heavy rain, as stream crossings might be affected.

This trail is renowned for its collection of medieval stone bridges, often called the "cornerstones of rural engineering of western Liguria." These arches, many built between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries, originally helped people reach chestnut groves. Beyond the famous Napoleon Bridge, you will also discover other significant structures like Ponte del Mulino and Ponte della Cianca. The historical significance of these bridges, combined with the natural beauty of the Ligurian landscape, makes this route a truly special experience.
