In 1859, the former colony of the Benevolent Society in Veenhuizen was taken over by the Dutch state and converted into a penitentiary. A new director's residence was built on behalf of the Ministry of the Interior, designed by the architect Johan Metzelaar. The building was initially unnamed, but was soon nicknamed Klein Soestdijk by the locals. The white building with its two side wings was apparently reminiscent of Soestdijk Castle.

It is the director's residence of the prisons in Veenhuizen, built in 1859 on behalf of the Ministry of the Interior with the symmetrical layout of the driveway, the green planting (with 'overtuin', garden landscaping continuing on the other side of the canal) and two cast-iron lanterns from 1855 by Corn. Nolet, Schiedam. The building is popularly known as 'Klein Soestdijk'.
