The polder meadows and re-wetted polder areas in the Peene Valley River Landscape Nature Park are among the most fascinating examples of large-scale peatland renaturation in Central Europe. After the valuable low-lying peat areas were intensively drained in the 19th and 20th centuries by dikes and pumping stations for agriculture, an unprecedented large-scale nature conservation project led to the targeted rollback of the polders. Today, the former meadows present themselves as species-rich, flooded wetlands, which are often also referred to as the "Amazon of the North".
