The Pope John Paul II Trail is a moderate hike that takes you through the beautiful Riserva Naturale Speciale del Sacro Monte di Oropa. You will begin by ascending through a forest alongside a stream, passing through UNESCO beech forests. As you climb, the path opens up, revealing wider views over Biella and the surrounding area. The trail becomes steeper with switchbacks as it approaches Rifugio Rosazza, which offers expansive views. This 3.6 miles (5.8 km) route involves a gain of 1227 feet (374 metres) and typically takes about 2 hours and 16 minutes to complete. A highlight is Lake delle Bose, a serene and picturesque spot perfect for a break.

Starting from the historic Sanctuary of Oropa, this trail is a pilgrimage route that requires some preparation. You will need sure-footedness and sturdy shoes, as some sections of the ascent, especially towards Rifugio Rosazza, can be strenuous. Plan your visit to allow ample time to enjoy the scenery and perhaps a stop at the Rifugio. Check local conditions before you go, especially regarding weather and trail accessibility.

This route connects the significant UNESCO World Heritage site of the Sanctuary of Oropa with an alpine hut and the picturesque Lake delle Bose. The historic Rifugio Rosazza, established over 150 years ago, offers traditional Piemontese cuisine and accommodation if you wish to extend your stay. The journey through the Biellese Alps provides a rewarding experience, blending natural beauty with cultural heritage.
