The bridge named after Edvard Beneš, the former president of the Czechoslovak Republic (Most Dr. E. Beneše), crosses the Vltava River in the south of the old town. It offers a wonderful view of St. Vitus Church across the river. Beneš, a co-founder of the republic, was president from 1935 to 1938 and from 1945 to 1948. During the German occupation between 1938 and 1945, he lived and was politically active in exile.
