The Great Elector's shipbuilding plans, which were closely linked to the work of the Dutchman Benjamin Raule, who was in Brandenburg's service, and the accelerated development of the Electorate of Brandenburg's navy, had an influence on the city's development. In 1680, Dutch experts, including Michael Mathias Smids, built a shipyard (shipbuilding yard) in the northern Dorotheenstadt in the area of today's Reichstagufer, where warships were also launched.
