The building was constructed according to the plans of architect Imre Steindl. Construction began in 1885, and the grand opening took place in 1896 to mark the 1000th anniversary of the founding of the Hungarian state. The building is approximately 268 meters long, has a 96-meter-high dome, and combines neo-Gothic elements with Renaissance influences.
