The slaughterhouses themselves were mostly located outside the city walls, as the trades associated with the disposal of slaughter waste often belonged to the "dishonorable crafts" and therefore could not be established in the city itself. In Breslau (Wrocław), the butchers' guild was concentrated in the small alley "Stare Jatki" (Old Butchers' Stalls). Meat in the Middle Ages was one of the most expensive and important trade goods, which mainly only wealthy citizens and the nobility could afford.

Stare Jatki in Wrocław (Wrocław) is a small, charming alley – formerly an old butcher's street, today full of art and sculptures.

Tip: It's best to come early in the morning or late in the afternoon when it's quieter. Then you can discover the small galleries and the famous animal figures in peace – and the atmosphere feels much more authentic.
