The bright red rocks of ferruginous sandstone come from the last ice age and are the breeding grounds of many thousands of birds. The nature reserve "Helgoländer Lummenfelsen" is with about 1 hectare the area smallest NSG in Germany, but still has up to 4,000 birds the highest breeding bird density. Mainly here are gannets, guillemots and various species of gulls.
