    Hiking

This is a steep hike uphill, but not too strenuous. The switchbacks of Lightning Switch Trail help on the way up, so it's better to go up this way and then go down Ghost Flats. The trail is not so frequented, so you might not see anyone else, but be aware that the trail is also shared with mountain bikers.

Embark on the Lightning Switch and Ghost Flats Loop, a moderate hiking route that takes you through the scenic Iron Hills Trail System. This 4.5-mile (7.2 km) journey involves a steady climb of 1007 feet (307 metres), offering increasingly expansive views of Cedar City as you ascend. You can expect to complete this loop in about 2 hours and 15 minutes, navigating numerous switchbacks that make the elevation gain manageable while providing continuous scenic overlooks, especially as you approach the stunning View of Ghost Flats amidst pinion pine and juniper trees.

To begin your hike, head to the Thunderbird Gardens Trailhead, where convenient parking is available. This trail is multi-use, so be aware that you might encounter mountain bikers and trail runners during your visit. If you plan to bring your dog, they are welcome on the Lightning Switch section of the trail. Planning your visit during cooler parts of the day might enhance your experience, especially given the moderate difficulty and elevation gain.

The Iron Hills Trail System, where this loop is located, is known for its diverse terrain and accessibility from Cedar City. The route's design, featuring many switchbacks, is a key characteristic that helps hikers manage the ascent and enjoy the surrounding landscape without overly strenuous sections. This trail offers a rewarding outdoor experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in the natural environment and appreciate the unique geological features of the region.
