Only in 1891, when the new Institute of Physics was built on the university campus, was an observatory established here and equipped with modern instruments from Carl Zeiss Jena. In 1924 it went into operation and served research and teaching until the end of World War II. An association, founded in 1992, made the historic observatory publicly accessible. The rotatable dome with a diameter of 6 meters at a height of about 35 meters could be renovated and the valuable telescope reconstructed. Modern equipment, such as a radio telescope developed at the Max Planck Institute in Garching, complements the facilities.greifswald.de/de/mein-greifswald/denkmal/universitaet/sternwarte
