In 1939, Benito Mussolini commissioned the construction of five bunkers around Lake Dobbiaco as part of the Alpine Wall. Thousands of fortifications were intended to protect the Italian border against attacks by the German Reich. Interesting background: Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini and National Socialist dictator Adolf Hitler were actually allies since the signing of the Steel Pact in May 1939. However, in Alta Pusteria alone, almost 50 bunkers were built between 1938 and 1942. Only after the fall of the Berlin Wall did the Alpine Wall finally lose its importance.
