Embark on a moderate hike along the Glaciological Trail to Bocchetta delle Pisse, a route that takes you deep into the Monte Rosa massif. This 3.8-mile (6.2 km) journey involves a significant climb of 1820 feet (555 metres) and typically takes around 3 hours and 20 minutes to complete. You'll traverse dense forests before emerging into the wide glacial cirque of Alpe Bors, a green basin where a stream meanders. The path then climbs alongside the cascading Bors torrent, leading you past charming grey stone houses. As you ascend, you'll eventually reach the beautiful mountain pass of Bocchetta delle Pisse, offering expansive views of the glacial landscape. This trail provides a true mountain experience, combining challenging ascents with rewarding vistas.
To begin your adventure, you can park at Wold. From there, you have the option to hike the entire route or take a summer shuttle service to the Acqua Bianca waterfall, which shortens your initial approach. The trail then continues its ascent towards the Rifugio Crespi Calderini, nestled within a beautifully restored Walser village. This refuge offers a perfect spot to rest and enjoy hearty mountain fare before continuing your climb. Always check local conditions and shuttle schedules, especially during peak season, to plan your visit effectively.
The Glaciological Trail is more than just a hike; it's a journey through the Alta Valsesia Natural Park, showcasing a landscape profoundly shaped by ice and stone. You'll pass the historic Rifugio Crespi Calderini, which is part of a restored Walser village, offering a glimpse into the region's unique cultural heritage. The route culminates at Bocchetta delle Pisse, a significant mountain pass where several trails converge, making it a natural hub for exploring the surrounding Monte Rosa peaks. From the Belvedere viewpoint, you can admire Alpe Bors from above, along with the impressive Pisse waterfall and the source of the Sesia river.
