Embark on an easy hike along the Gumbo Limbo Trail, a short 0.9-mile (1.4 km) route that takes about 21 minutes to complete. You will gain only 1 foot (0 metres) in elevation, making it a very gentle walk through a dense, jungle-like tropical hardwood hammock. As you wander, look for the distinctive gumbo limbo tree, easily identified by its peeling red bark, which gives it the nickname 'tourist tree'. Above you, a lush canopy of royal palms, ferns, and various air plants creates a vibrant green environment. Keep an eye out for solution holes, natural depressions in the limestone bedrock that sometimes hold small pools of water.

You will find the Gumbo Limbo Trail conveniently located near the Royal Palm Visitor Center inside Everglades National Park. Its paved surface and short length make it highly accessible for most visitors, including families with young children. The trail is mostly shaded, offering a cooler experience from the Florida sun, which can be particularly welcome during warmer parts of the day. Plan your visit to the park accordingly, as entrance fees apply.

This trail offers a unique glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the Everglades, showcasing a tropical hardwood hammock ecosystem. The Gumbo Limbo Trail is a prime example of the park's efforts to preserve and present these fragile environments to the public. It provides an accessible way to experience the dense, jungle-like atmosphere and observe the unique plant life that thrives in this wetland region. Consider combining your visit with other short walks or ranger programs available at the Royal Palm Visitor Center.
