The hilly area of the Appelbergen must be one of the most beautiful places in the Hondsrug. The former military training area is located on the Hondsrug east of the village of Glimmen. The first part of the name is pronounced Appèl (according to the people of Groningen). It is still a reminder of military use, as this was the place where the troops gathered for field exercises. The area around the Appelbergen has a high density of remains from the ice ages and other prehistoric remains.
