The statue of Emperor Karl I of Austria stands in the square in front of the Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte above Funchal and commemorates the last ruler of the Habsburg Monarchy, who lived in exile on Madeira and died there in 1922. The bronze statue depicts him in a dignified pose and was erected in honor of his beatification. It is not only an important monument for history buffs but also stands at a particularly scenic spot, offering a magnificent view over Funchal and the surrounding landscape.
