Since the beginning of the 14th century, the so-called whetstones have been made by hand in the towns of Schwangau, Halblech, Unterammergau and Ohlstadt, from the Ammergau whetstone layer, also known as whetstone lime. This extraordinary layer of rock runs through the entire Ammer Mountains, opens up in several outcrops and connects Ohlstadt, Grafenaschau and Unterammergau in the Zugspitz region. In 1754 there were 17 quarries and 19 grinding mills in Ohlstadt.
