Adam Ries (often also Adam Riese; * 1492 or 1493 in Staffelstein, Prince-Bishopric of Bamberg; † March 30 or April 2, 1559 presumably in Annaberg or Wiesa) was a German master of calculation. He became known for his textbook "Rechnung auff der Linihen und Federn", which was published at least 120 times until the 17th century. It is remarkable that Adam Ries wrote his works not – as was customary at the time – in Latin, but in German. This allowed him to reach a large readership and also contributed to the unification of the German language.
