The Palos Yellow and Orange Trail Loop offers a diverse mountain biking experience, winding through the expansive Palos Forest Preserves. You'll navigate a mix of rolling widetrack and tight, twisty singletrack, with technical features like tree roots and bermed turns. Keep an eye out for scenic views of Maple Lake and the surrounding woodlands and prairies as you ride.
This moderate 17.9-mile (28.7 km) loop, with 621 feet (189 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes around 2 hours and 21 minutes to complete. The Palos system is bi-directional with many intersections, so bringing a trail map is a good idea to help you customize your route and avoid getting lost. Parking is available at various points within the preserve.
Known as the largest trail system in the Chicago area, Palos offers something for many skill levels, though this combined loop leans towards intermediate riders. The varied terrain, a result of glacial activity, provides significant elevation for the region, making for a dynamic and engaging ride away from city noise.

The Stonehouse – Tomahawk Slough loop offers a dynamic mountain biking experience through the varied terrain of the Palos Forest Preserves. The trail winds around scenic ravines and passes by water features such as Tomahawk Slough, providing a rich visual experience.
This difficult 9.3 miles (15.0 km) route, with 382 feet (116 metres) of elevation gain, is designed for advanced riders and typically takes about 1 hour and 13 minutes to complete. Starting from Plot M, be aware that some sections may require pushing your bike, and the trails can be wet and slippery after rain, so plan your visit accordingly.
This loop combines the popular Stonehouse mountain biking trails with the Tomahawk Slough area, showcasing diverse ecosystems shaped by glacial activity. The starting point at Plot M even carries a unique historical context, having been associated with the Manhattan Project. The trails are well-maintained by local groups like CAMBr, ensuring good riding conditions when dry.
