The name of the area is taken from the Belgian diplomat Emile-Ernest de Cartier de Marchienne. His father, Mr. Paul-Emile de Cartier de Marchienne, bought the Duizels Hof, located near this heath, in 1863 and later passed into the hands of his son. Emile-Ernest de Cartier de Marchienne later became the owner of the heath and used it, among other things, as a hunting ground.

The Cartierheide is a nature reserve that is part of the De Kempen Nature Reserve and is located in the Dutch municipality of Bladel. The area covers 172 hectares and is located 3 km from the Belgian border, sandwiched between the road from Eersel to Postel and the A67/E34 motorway near Hapert.
