The Burton Creek State Park Loop offers a challenging jogging experience through the heart of the Sierra Nevada, covering 8.4 miles (13.5 km) with a significant 993 feet (303 metres) of elevation gain. This difficult route, which takes about 1 hour and 37 minutes, winds through dense pine forests and open High Sierra meadows, providing a dynamic workout on unpaved singletrack and dirt roads. You'll encounter rolling hills and rewarding uphill sections, with the chance to spot glimpses of Lake Tahoe through the trees.

This day-use park is a popular spot for trail running, but be prepared for varied terrain and challenging ascents. While the full loop is rated difficult, the park's extensive trail network offers options for different fitness levels. Consider visiting in spring for vibrant wildflowers or in fall to see the colorful cottonwood trees. In winter, many trails are groomed for cross-country skiing, so conditions will be different.

Burton Creek State Park is an undeveloped 2,000-acre preserve dedicated to offering a genuine Sierra Nevada experience. The Antone Meadows Natural Preserve within the park is a highlight, protecting a unique mountain meadow and riparian forest, and providing excellent vistas. The park's trails also connect to other popular routes, including sections of the Tahoe Rim Trail, making it a great hub for exploring the wider region and enjoying wildlife spotting.
