A terrorist attack in the form of a bombing was carried out on Via dei Georgofili on May 27, 1993, in front of the Uffizi Gallery, carried out by the Sicilian Mafia in retaliation for the arrest of Mafia boss Salvatore Riina.
The large explosion caused the death of five people, and forty-eight other people were injured by the blast. The tower and other buildings were destroyed and others were damaged, including the Uffizi Gallery and the Vasari Corridor, where several paintings were seriously damaged or destroyed.
