Embark on the Boarelli and Berardo Bivouacs Loop, a difficult hike spanning 8.3 miles (13.4 km) with a substantial elevation gain of 4181 feet (1274 metres). You should set aside approximately 7 hours and 44 minutes for this high-alpine adventure. The route immerses you in rugged scenery, leading you through the wild Vallone delle Forciolline, where you will discover a series of waterfalls. Expect to navigate vast scree fields and traverse parts of the Bosco dell'Alevè, a mixed forest of Swiss pine and larch. You will be rewarded with impressive views of the surrounding mountains, including Monviso, and a striking blue lake behind Bivacco Boarelli.
Planning your visit is key for this challenging route. The recommended period for hiking is from July to September, as conditions outside these months can be difficult. Navigation can be tricky in certain areas, especially over scree fields, so it is not advisable to attempt this hike in bad weather or poor visibility. You can typically find parking near the Castello district of Pontechianale, which serves as the starting point for the loop.
This loop is situated within the stunning Parco Naturale Regionale del Monviso, an area known for its diverse and untamed landscapes. The trail offers a unique opportunity to experience the raw beauty of the region, from its cascading waterfalls to its ancient forests. It is best suited for experienced trekkers who possess excellent physical fitness and sure-footedness, ensuring you can fully enjoy the demanding yet rewarding journey.

The Punta Dante – loop tour in Valle Varaita is a difficult hike spanning 10.2 miles (16.4 km) with a significant elevation gain of 5187 feet (1581 metres), requiring about 9 hours and 5 minutes to complete. You will begin with a steep climb through the beautiful stone pine forest of Alevé, one of the largest in the Alps. As you ascend, the path leads into a wide detrital basin and then a stony trail, eventually reaching the challenging “canalone delle Forciolline” gully. The scenery is spectacular, offering panoramic views of the south face of Monviso and alpine lakes like Lago Bertin.
This demanding route typically starts near the hamlet of Castello in Pontechianale. Due to its difficulty and the potential for early season snow, especially given its western exposure, you should be prepared with an ice axe and crampons if hiking in spring. The trail includes sections that require easy climbing on side rocks and navigating unstable stony strips, so caution and experience are essential. You might find potential rest points at Bivacco Bertoglio and Bivacco Boarelli at Forciolline.
The Punta Dante hike is notable for following part of the historical ascent route to Monviso, allowing you to retrace the steps of past mountaineers. From the summit, you get an excellent vantage point for appreciating the majestic Monviso, which is the highest mountain in the Cottian Alps and a symbol of the Cuneo region. The challenging “canalone delle Forciolline” is a significant and demanding section that sets this route apart.
