    Hiking

The Hidden Palms Trail keeps exactly what it promises, and the palms are really well hidden (you will still find them!). The hike is short, doesn't include any (very) tough inclines, and might be a nice alternative to the more popular Pushawalla Palms.

    Pushwalla Palms Loop

The Pushwalla Palms Loop offers a fascinating glimpse into the desert's unique ecosystem, taking you through sandy paths, across washes, and up to a ridgeline with continuous, panoramic views of the Coachella Valley. The true gem of this route is the vibrant Pushwalla Palms oasis, a lush grove of native California fan palms sustained by spring water bubbling up from the San Andreas Fault. Keep an eye out for the endangered Coachella Valley fringe-toed lizard, which blends almost perfectly with the sandy terrain.

This easy 2.0-mile (3.2 km) hiking loop, with a gentle 214 feet (65 metres) of elevation gain, can be completed in about 53 minutes, making it an excellent option for a quick desert exploration. Be sure to bring plenty of water and sun protection, as the trail is largely exposed. The best time to experience the dramatic scenery is often in the hours leading up to sunset.

What makes this trail truly special is its direct connection to the San Andreas Fault system, showcasing how tectonic forces create and sustain life in an otherwise arid environment. The fault line pushes groundwater upward, allowing these remarkable palm oases to flourish. It's a unique opportunity to witness the powerful interplay of geology and ecology.
