    Road cycling

If you ride the entire Around-Mountain Carriage Road loop you'll encircle Sargent Mountain & a number of lower peaks. Though you won't summit of these you will still find plenty of elevation gain. Nothing is too steep though and as is the case throughout Acadia the scenery and architecture is outstanding.

The Around the Mountain Loop offers a moderate racebike experience, covering 11.4 miles (18.4 km) with 1377 feet (420 metres) of elevation gain. You can expect to complete this route in about 3 hours and 50 minutes. As you cycle on hard-packed gravel carriage roads, you'll pass by iconic landmarks like Jordan Pond and the Bubbles, with views extending towards Frenchmen Bay. The trail provides a varied landscape, moving through forests, open glades, and expansive alpine vistas, creating a dynamic ride.

When planning your visit, note that parking near the Jordan Pond House, a common starting point, can be challenging during peak seasons. A smart option is to utilize the free Island Explorer bus system, which can transport you and your racebike directly to the trailhead. This public transport service ensures easier access to the historic carriage roads and helps avoid parking frustrations. Consider an early start to enjoy the route with fewer people.

This route stands out for its unique cycling surface on historic carriage roads, a distinctive feature of the area. Along the way, you'll encounter charming historic stone arch bridges and the picturesque Waterfall Bridge as you descend from Sargent Mountain. The trail's design and natural beauty make it a memorable ride within Acadia National Park, offering a blend of history and scenic views.
