Kaihalulu Beach (Red Sand Beach)

Embark on a touring cycling adventure through Maui's lush Hana Forest Reserve on the Koki Beach to Kaihalulu Beach loop. This route takes you through vibrant tropical rainforests and along dramatic coastlines, culminating in the striking Kaihalulu Beach, famously known as Red Sand Beach. The cycling portion is a moderate 5.5-mile (8.9 km) journey with 662 feet (202 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 45 minutes, but the final approach to the beach is a challenging, steep hike.

While the cycling is mostly on paved roads, be ready for varying conditions, including narrow, winding sections, unpaved stretches, and loose gravel. Caution is advised on one-lane bridges and in slippery conditions, especially after rain. The path to Kaihalulu Beach requires dismounting and navigating a short but perilous trail with loose dirt, rocks, and steep drop-offs, so sturdy walking shoes are a must.

This loop offers a unique way to experience Maui's remote and wild side, with Kaihalulu Beach standing out as one of Hawaii's only red sand beaches.
