Embark on The Lee and Herbert's Hole loop from Chartridge, a moderate hike through the picturesque Chiltern Hills. This 9.3-mile (15.0 km) route, with 379 feet (116 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes around 3 hours and 55 minutes to complete. You will wander through diverse scenery, including open fields, woodlands, and grassy meadows, passing tall hedgerows and enjoying expansive valley views. Keep an eye out for attractive old houses and a small brick church, and find a tranquil spot to rest at the Hampden Pond Conservation Area.
The trail follows varied footpaths and tracks, which can be rough in places, making it unsuitable for wheelchairs or buggies. As you hike, you might notice the distinct scent of wild garlic on warmer days, adding to the sensory experience. For a break, consider stopping at one of the charming old country inns, such as The Cock and Rabbit in Lee village, but remember to check their opening hours in advance.
This loop incorporates sections of the historic Chiltern Link and the Ridgeway National Trail, connecting you to wider historical pathways. A significant highlight is The Lee village itself, considered one of the most beautiful in the Chilterns, with its large village green and attractive brick houses, including the historic Lee Manor. The village name, derived from the Old English "leah," means "a clearing in a wood," reflecting its natural setting.
