The new town hall was built in 1938 to a design by Ghent architect Geo Bontinck. The old town hall (Franz Wittoucklaan 33), dating from 1868 and designed by architect Edmond de Perry-Montigny, was then repurposed as a maternity hospital and clinic. The new town hall was built in a surprising modern style. It was intended to symbolize modern Zelzate as an industrial town along the Ghent-Terneuzen canal. Today, Zelzate's town hall is a beautiful example of modernist architecture from the interwar period. The building is clearly influenced by the Dutch architectural movements of that period. Protected since 2005.
