    Hiking

Upper Hadlock Pond fills with rainwater from the cascade of peaks west of Sargent Mountain, and is regular home to stocked trout. The pond is open to fishing and kayaking. The trails sport boardwalks and make a great easy walk and change from exposed mountain scenery.

Cycle the easy Hadlock Loop, a 4.0 miles (6.4 km) touring bicycle route that winds through the scenic mountains and valleys of Acadia National Park. You will experience a gentle climb of 378 feet (115 metres) over approximately 40 minutes, making this a perfect short ride. As you pedal, you will see rich landscapes filled with native vegetation like blueberries and sweet fern. A highlight of your journey is crossing historic carriage road bridges, including the notable Waterfall Bridge, which offers a beautiful view of Hadlock Falls.

The Hadlock Loop is part of Acadia National Park's well-maintained carriage road system, which was originally built for motor-free travel. These roads are generally in good condition, but be prepared for some noticeable inclines and declines. If you prefer a gentler ascent, consider cycling the loop in the 13-18-19-12-13 direction. Some cyclists might find it easier to dismount and walk a short section of the continuous uphill climb between intersections 19 and 12.

This route is a prime example of Acadia National Park's unique carriage roads, designed to offer a tranquil experience away from motorized traffic. The system was a gift from John D. Rockefeller Jr., who envisioned a network of roads that blended seamlessly with the natural environment. These historic roads provide a glimpse into the park's past while offering a peaceful way to explore its diverse ecosystems and stunning vistas.

The Witch Hole Pond Carriage Road – Stone bridge loop from Staff Parking offers a challenging touring cycling experience through Acadia National Park's tranquil interior. This difficult 26.7-mile (42.9 km) route, with its 1742 feet (531 metres) of elevation gain, guides you along car-free crushed gravel roads, past Witch Hole Pond, Halfmoon Pond, and the impressive Duck Brook Bridge. Expect to spend around 4 hours and 14 minutes navigating quiet woods and marshy areas, with opportunities to spot wildlife like beavers.

Starting from Staff Parking, be ready for a strenuous uphill climb right at the beginning of the route, which sets the tone for this difficult ride. While the carriage roads are well-maintained, a hybrid or mountain bike is recommended for the gravel surface. Plan to bring plenty of water and snacks, especially if you're tackling this ride during warmer months, and consider an early start to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

This route is part of Acadia's extensive carriage road system, a unique gift from John D. Rockefeller Jr., designed to blend with the natural landscape and featuring iconic stone bridges. The marshlands and ponds along the way are excellent for wildlife viewing, making it a rewarding journey for those who appreciate both natural beauty and a good workout. It's a fantastic option for experienced cyclists looking for one of the best touring cycling trails in Acadia National Park.
