    Running

Horseshoe Lake Trail is one of the most popular trails in the park, but the cool temperatures coming off of the water make the trails a little less crowded during morning runs.

The trail features a few rolling hills with the biggest climb/descent coming near the trailhead. The trail loops around Horseshoe Lake, some beaver ponds, and passes right by the park's eastern boundary: the Nenana River.

The Horseshoe Lake Trail offers a moderate jogging experience through forested scenery, perfect for a quick workout. You'll cover 4.1 miles (6.7 km) with a gentle elevation gain of 330 feet (101 metres), which most people can complete in about 47 minutes. The route first gives you a high-up view of Horseshoe Lake before leading you down to its peaceful shoreline. As you jog along the water, you'll notice the impressive beaver dam and the calm reflections of trees on the surface. It's a refreshing run where you can truly feel connected to nature.

This trail is very easy to get to, located right near the Denali Visitor Center, making it a convenient choice for many. To enjoy a quieter experience and avoid the busiest times, consider starting your jog early in the morning or later in the afternoon. The path is mostly well-kept, but be ready for one short, steep section that drops about 250 feet down to the lake and then climbs back up. There are no special permits or fees needed to access this route, so you can just show up and enjoy your run.

This route is a fantastic way to explore Denali National Park's natural beauty, showcasing a vibrant ecosystem around the lake. The western side of the loop is especially scenic, offering beautiful reflections on the water. Keep your eyes open; you might even spot local wildlife like moose or beavers enjoying the tranquil surroundings. It's a great opportunity to experience the park's wild side up close.
