This natural bridge isn't like ones you may have seen elsewhere. Rather than being cut through the erosive action of the river, this "bridge" is actually an ancient lava tube that the river flows through for about 200 feet.

    Hiking

In the early spring, the rushing waters of the Rogue River may obscure the features of Natural Bridge - where the waters briefly dip underground as they roar through a lava tube. The gate remains closed until early spring; you may have to hike in from the road if this is the case.

The Rogue River Natural Bridge trail offers a captivating glimpse into Southern Oregon's volcanic past, where the mighty Rogue River performs a spectacular disappearing act. You'll follow the Upper Rogue Wild and Scenic River through ancient forests, leading to the Natural Bridge where the river plunges into a lava tube and flows underground. This easy 0.8-mile (1.3 km) hike, with a mere 70 feet (21 metres) of elevation gain, takes only about 20 minutes, making it a perfect short adventure for all ages.

Access to the main Natural Bridge viewpoint is via a short, paved, barrier-free loop, ensuring it's easy for most visitors. For those wanting a bit more, unpaved sections wind along the river, though be mindful that mossy lava rock can be very slippery in wet conditions. While beautiful in winter with snow, always check local conditions before you go, and consider an early start for parking.

This unique geological feature is a direct result of ancient lava flows that created a network of caves and tubes, through which the river now carves its path. The trail is part of the larger Upper Rogue River Trail system, offering a taste of the dramatic landscapes found along this wild river. It's a fantastic spot to witness the raw power of nature and the fascinating interplay between water and volcanic rock.
