    Hiking

This beautiful trail passes through madrone and oak woods before emerging into grasslands peppered with very large old oak trees. The wooded areas on the route are a welcome relief on a hot day. The trail runs along Steven Creek and its tributaries, offering a lush forest floor ladened with wild rose, ferns and gooseberry under the California bay and big-leaf maple trees.

Bay Area Ridge, Canyon, and Peters Creek Trail Loop

    670m

Embark on the Bay Area Ridge, Canyon, and Peters Creek Trail Loop for a challenging hiking adventure that spans 15.0 miles (24.1 km). This difficult route demands a good fitness level, featuring a significant elevation gain of 2210 feet (674 metres) and typically taking around 7 hours and 2 minutes to complete. You will experience dramatic shifts in scenery, moving from exposed ridge tops offering panoramic views of the Santa Cruz Mountains to the cool, shaded depths of canyon bottoms.

When planning your visit, be prepared for a strenuous hike with considerable elevation changes, including a steep descent into Peters Creek and a demanding climb back to the ridge. The trail can be rough and potentially slippery after rain, so wear appropriate footwear. Also, be aware of potential poison oak and fallen trees along the path. Allow yourself ample time to finish the loop, especially if you are hiking during warmer weather when the exposed sections can be particularly demanding.

One of the highlights of this route is the serene Peters Creek Grove, which you will descend into. This area is home to one of the last pristine old-growth redwood groves in the Bay Area, where towering trees create a truly unique atmosphere. The trail also offers views of Horseshoe Lake, adding to the diverse natural beauty you will encounter throughout your journey.
