St James church is unusual in that the chancel and tower are disconnected. The nave was destroyed during the Interregnum, when Oliver Cromwell was Lord Protector of England.

The tower and chancel are both Grade II listed and date from the 15th century.

Embark on the Spalding and Peterborough loop from Sutton St James, a difficult touring cycling route spanning 59.7 miles (96.1 km) with a minimal 409 feet (125 metres) of elevation gain. This journey through the Lincolnshire Fens offers expansive, tranquil views over vast agricultural fields and a network of dykes. You can expect to complete this ride in about 5 hours and 45 minutes, enjoying the serene environment and the unique flat topography.

While the route is generally considered a hard bike ride requiring a very good fitness level, its predominantly flat terrain makes some segments accessible for all skill levels. The trail primarily uses paved surfaces, ideal for road cycling, but be aware that some sections may be unpaved gravel tracks, such as the excellent segment between Crowland and Peakirk which is part of National Cycle Network 12. Planning your visit during spring or summer will allow you to experience the countryside at its most vibrant.

This loop is rich in historical and natural context. You will pass St. James' Church in Sutton St. James, an unusual 15th-century site with a disconnected chancel and tower. Further along, Trinity Bridge in Crowland stands as a unique 14th-century three-way bridge. The entire landscape, crisscrossed by drainage channels and rivers like the Glen and Welland, is a testament to centuries of land reclamation from the sea, giving the Fens their distinctive character.
