The Fox Creek and Rock Creek Loop near Allenspark, Colorado, offers a delightful journey through diverse landscapes, from quiet forests to open meadows. You'll follow the soothing sounds of both Rock Creek and Fox Creek, eventually reaching the picturesque Grotto Falls, a perfect spot to pause and soak it all in. Keep an eye out for the impressive ancient Ponderosa pine and the point where the two creeks merge, often described as a small waterfall.
This easy 4.0-mile (6.5 km) hiking route involves a manageable 628 feet (191 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes about 1 hour and 54 minutes to complete. The trail starts just outside Allenspark, with roadside parking available; however, a USFS permit or pass might be needed. It's a popular trail, so consider an early start to avoid crowds, especially during peak seasons.
Beyond the natural beauty, the loop also offers a peek into the area's past with old mining ruins scattered along the way. Wildlife sightings, including moose, elk, and mountain goats, are common, adding an exciting element to your hike. The trail also provides panoramic views of iconic peaks like Longs Peak, Twin Sisters, and Estes Cone, making it a rewarding experience for its relatively short distance.
