Embark on an easy 2.1 miles (3.4 km) hike along the Chimney Top and Half Moon Arch Trail, where you will gain 398 feet (121 metres) in elevation over approximately 1 hour and 2 minutes. This route offers a blend of accessible panoramic views from Chimney Top Rock and a more rugged exploration to the unique Half Moon Arch. You will experience diverse terrain, from well-trodden paths to areas requiring careful foot placement, all within the scenic Daniel Boone National Forest.
Before you go, be aware that access to the trailhead via National Forest Road 10, a 4.5-mile gravel road, can sometimes be closed due to conditions. If this happens, you might need to walk further to reach the start of the trail. The section leading to Half Moon Arch is unmarked and involves scrambling over exposed cliffs and rock ledges, so good sure-footedness is essential. It is strongly advised not to hike this particular section alone due to the challenges involved.
This trail is notable for combining two distinct natural features into one experience, offering both expansive vistas and a close-up encounter with an iconic sandstone formation. From Chimney Top Rock, you can enjoy broad views of the Red River Gorge and surrounding mountains, even spotting Half Moon Arch in the distance. The arch itself is a striking sandstone pinnacle, providing a unique geological highlight within the gorge scenery.
