    Hiking

The old dam across the river makes for an interesting stop, but the water can be deceptive so take caution. There are some dead end trails in the area so keep your maps handy.

    Running

Nice view from the running path of an old dam that is no longer in use. The bottom of the dam has been re-opened to allow water to pass through, but you can still see the old structure of the dam.

The Eagle Island State Park Loop offers a delightful and accessible outdoor experience, guiding you through a blend of open fields and tranquil riverside paths. You'll find yourself walking alongside the Boise River, with opportunities to spot local wildlife and enjoy the natural beauty of the park. The trail's flat terrain and minimal elevation make it a perfect choice for a relaxed outing, especially during the vibrant autumn season when fall colors enhance the scenery.

Planning your visit is straightforward, with the park located conveniently between the north and south channels of the Boise River, ensuring easy access and parking. This easy 4.1-mile (6.5 km) hiking loop, with only 17 feet (5 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes about 1 hour and 38 minutes to complete. It's an excellent option for families or anyone seeking a gentle, scenic walk without significant challenges.

What makes this trail particularly notable is its location within Eagle Island State Park, an important bird area recognized by the National Audubon Society. Keep an eye out for Wood Ducks, Belted Kingfishers, and Great Blue Herons. The park also boasts a rich history, having once been a penitentiary farm before becoming a state park, and offers a wide array of recreational activities beyond hiking, including swimming and disc golf, making it a versatile destination for a day trip.
