Parking at Fairfield Beach is available at various lots serving the different town beaches, such as Jennings Beach and Penfield Beach. During the peak season (Memorial Day to Labor Day), a beach sticker or daily pass is typically required for parking. These can often be purchased at the gate or through the town's recreation department. Parking lots, especially at popular spots like Jennings Beach, tend to fill up quickly on weekends and holidays, so arriving early is highly recommended.

While the primary walking experience at Fairfield Beach is along its five-mile coastline, there are additional recreational opportunities nearby. For those seeking more traditional hiking trails, Lake Mohegan, a freshwater facility inland from the beach, offers a network of trails. These trails provide a different natural experience, complementing the coastal walks.

The terrain along Fairfield Beach is predominantly soft sand. However, for walkers and trail runners, the footing near the water's edge is often firmer and more compact, making it suitable for longer distances. The entire stretch is relatively flat with no significant elevation changes, making it an easy and accessible route for most fitness levels.

Several beaches along the Fairfield coastline are particularly family-friendly. Penfield Beach is highly recommended, featuring the Jessica Rekos Memorial Playground and the Penfield Pavilion. Jennings Beach is also a great option, offering a large sandy area, concession stands, and bathroom facilities. Both provide calm waters suitable for swimming and sunbathing with children.

Fairfield Beach is generally dog-friendly during the off-season, from October 1 through March 31, when leashed dogs are permitted on most beaches. A notable exception is Jennings Beach, which allows off-leash dogs year-round in designated areas. Always ensure your dog is under control and that you clean up after them to maintain the beach's cleanliness for all visitors.

The Fairfield Beach coastline offers several points of interest. As you walk south from The Preserve at Saint Mary's-by-the-Sea, you'll pass numerous piers and fishing docks, which can offer scenic views and photo opportunities. The expansive views across the Long Island Sound are a constant highlight, often dotted with sailboats. Jennings Beach also features a fishing pier with a bait shack, providing a classic coastal landmark.

While some beaches like Jennings and Penfield have concession stands during peak season, for a wider selection of cafes, pubs, and restaurants, you'll want to head to downtown Fairfield. It's just a short drive or walk from many of the beach access points and offers a variety of dining and shopping options to complement your beach visit.

Fairfield Beach stretches for approximately five miles along the Long Island Sound. Walking the entire length, depending on your pace and whether you walk one way or round trip, could take anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours or more. The firm sand near the water's edge makes for a pleasant and relatively easy long-distance walk.

Fairfield Beach is known for its calm waters within the Long Island Sound, making it suitable for swimming. While there aren't specific 'wild swimming' designations, the various town beaches like Jennings and Penfield offer wide sandy expanses and relatively safe conditions for swimming. During peak season, these areas are often monitored by lifeguards, providing a safer environment for swimmers.

To avoid the largest crowds, especially during warmer months and on weekends, it's best to visit Fairfield Beach early in the morning (before 9-10 AM) or later in the afternoon/early evening. Many visitors arrive mid-morning and stay through the afternoon, so these shoulder times offer a more peaceful experience. The off-season (October to March) also provides a much quieter atmosphere.
