The town was established in the early 1870s for workers of Caribou silver mine. The silver mine did well and by 1875 at its peak, about 3,000 people lived in town.

The Caribou silver mine was sold for $3 million to Dutch Investors in 1871. It was resold in 1876 to local entrepreneurs who incorporated the mine and sold shares in New York. A fire took over the town in 1879. By the 1920s, Caribou was home to fewer than 50 people.

Embark on an easy hiking adventure to the historic Caribou Ghost Town via Caribou Hill, a route that blends scenic beauty with a journey back in time. You'll traverse open meadows, often adorned with wildflowers, and wind through pine and aspen forests, all while enjoying panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains and the Eldora Ski Area from Caribou Hill. The 2.9-mile (4.7 km) trail, rated easy, involves a gentle 428 feet (130 metres) of elevation gain, making it a perfect outing for most abilities and taking about 1 hours and 23 minutes.

When planning your visit, be aware that the final half-mile of Caribou Road leading to the ghost town can be quite rocky, potentially challenging for vehicles without high clearance. Summer brings vibrant wildflowers, while autumn showcases stunning fall colors, making these seasons particularly appealing for a visit. Winter also offers opportunities for snowshoeing, transforming the landscape into a serene, snowy wonderland.

This trail's main draw is the evocative Caribou Ghost Town, once a bustling silver mining hub in 1875. You can explore the remnants of log cabins, stone buildings, and old mining equipment, offering a unique glimpse into Colorado's past. Beyond the historical landmarks, the area is home to diverse wildlife; keep an eye out for eagles, elk, deer, and moose, especially in the quieter sections of the trail.
