The Isar floodplains, with their small bodies of water, sparsely vegetated gravel banks in the floodplain, as well as willow thickets and riparian forests, offer diverse habitats for rare plants and animals. Their biodiversity is often compared to that of a tropical rainforest. Particularly significant are the so-called Brennen (burning areas), gravel areas created by floodwaters, with their flower-rich grasslands.
