The summer and winter resort was built in 1925 as a suburb of Antibes at the southern end of the peninsula and soon became the destination of tourists looking for relaxation. Numerous luxury hotels and sophisticated private villas with extensive grounds made Juan-les-Pins a much-visited and expensive seaside resort. American artists and business people in particular spent a "time of doing nothing and a thousand parties" here, as described by the US writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. Marlene Dietrich, Gary Cooper, Josephine Baker and Coco Chanel were among the prominent guests at Juan-les-Pins.
