Sallie Barber Mine

The Sallie Barber Mine Trail offers an easy hike through shaded conifer forests, occasionally opening up to reveal impressive mountain vistas and views towards the Breckenridge ski area. You will also encounter a roaring stream and a small, beautiful waterfall along the way. This route covers 1.4 miles (2.2 km) with a gentle elevation gain of 398 feet (121 metres), making it a quick and rewarding experience that takes about 40 minutes to complete.

When planning your visit, be aware that the trail starts at an elevation over 10,000 feet, which might be challenging if you are not accustomed to high altitudes. The path itself is an old jeep road, generally wide and well-traveled, making for straightforward navigation. During winter, the trail is popular for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, and it's often packed enough for those using spikes. However, spring runoff can sometimes lead to washouts and rutting on steeper sections.

The trail leads directly to the historic Sallie Barber Mine, a significant landmark where you can explore remnants of its past operations, including a headframe. Interpretive signs at the site explain the mine's role in the region's rich mining history.
