The Hessian Ried used to be a predominantly swampy area with extensive alluvial forests and wet meadows, which began to change significantly more than 100 years ago. Today, the several 1,000 hectares of forest are threatened by lowering of the groundwater level, because from about 1960 large waterworks pumped so much groundwater to Frankfurt and the entire Rhine-Main area that the forests suffered from water shortages and, above all, the old stands died off. At the "Round Table on Groundwater Remediation" in 2015, a compromise was worked out that takes into account the interests of forest and nature conservation.
